What Is a Google Business Profile — And Why It's Costing You Jobs If It's Not Set Up Right

September 17, 2026

Most contractors have heard of Google Business Profile (GBP) — a lot of you already have one — but few actually know what it’s doing for you, or against you, right now.

Here’s the short version: it’s the free listing Google shows when someone searches your business name directly, or searches for a service you offer nearby. It’s the card with your hours, phone number, reviews, and a map pin. For a huge number of searches, it’s the only thing a customer sees before deciding whether to call.

It’s Not Optional — It’s Often the First Impression

Think about how you’d search for a roofer if your own roof was leaking right now. You’d type “roofer near me,” glance at the map results, and probably call one of the first three you saw. You might never visit a single website.

That’s the reality for your customers too. If your GBP is incomplete, out of date, or missing, you’re either invisible in that moment or you’re losing the job to whoever’s profile looks more legitimate — even if their work is worse than yours.

What a Complete Profile Actually Needs

Accurate hours — including holidays. Nothing kills trust faster than a customer showing up, or calling, when a profile says you’re open and you’re not.

A real phone number that goes to a real person. Not a number that’s been disconnected, not one that rings to voicemail with no callback. Every missed call from a GBP listing is a job going to the next name on the list.

Your actual service area, not just your office address. Most contractors work across multiple cities. GBP lets you define a service area separate from your business address — use it, so you show up in searches from every city you actually work in, not just the one you’re based in.

Photos that are yours, not stock images. Completed jobs, your crew, your truck with your logo — real photos build more trust than any amount of written copy, and Google’s own data shows profiles with photos get more calls and direction requests than profiles without.

A description that says exactly what you do and where. Not marketing fluff — plain language. “Licensed general contractor specializing in kitchen and bathroom remodels, serving Los Angeles and the South Bay.”

The Part Almost Everyone Skips: Messaging and Q&A

GBP lets customers message you directly from the listing, and it has a public Q&A section anyone can post to — including your competitors, sometimes accidentally answering questions incorrectly. Check both. An unanswered message sits there as a visible sign you’re not responsive; an unanswered or wrong Q&A answer can actively cost you a job before you ever get a call.

Why This Matters More in LA Specifically

Los Angeles is one of the most competitive local markets in the country for home services — and over 40% of the population is Spanish-speaking. A GBP profile (and the website behind it) that only exists in English is invisible to a huge share of potential customers who are searching in Spanish. Bilingual profiles and bilingual websites aren’t a nice-to-have here — they’re access to half the market your English-only competitors are missing entirely.

Quick Self-Check

Before anything else, pull up your own listing and ask:

  • Would a stranger know exactly what you do and where, in 10 seconds?
  • Are your hours actually correct today?
  • Do you have at least one real photo added in the last month?
  • Have you responded to your last five reviews?
  • Does your listed phone number ring through right now?

If you answered no to more than one of those, that’s likely costing you calls today, not eventually.
